Warm water, a little soap and a soft brush. Nothing stronger, because the old paint is part of the story.
Two corners had opened. They are now pinned with brass nails, set slightly below the surface.
A new handle from ash, shaped by hand to fit the old brackets.
Only paste wax, to feed the wood and take the dull look off.
